"@laurelwamsley, you and @NPR are spreading misinformation. This needs to be corrected, and it needs to be corrected now. No more excuses. Teens are being rushed into irreversible medical procedures"
Mary Herbert, Countess of Pembroke (née Sidney), born October 27, 1561 (died September 25,1621), was among the first Englishwomen to gain notice for her poetry and her literary patronage. By the age of 39, she was listed with her brother Philip Sidney and with Edmund Spenser and William Shakespeare among the notable authors of the day in John Bodenham's verse miscellany Belvidere. Her play Antonius is widely seen as reviving interest in soliloquy based on classical models and as a likely source of Samuel Daniel's closet drama Cleopatra (1594) and of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra (1607). She was also known for translating Petrarch's "Triumph of Death", for the poetry anthology Triumphs, and above all for a lyrical, metrical translation of the Psalms. (more)
Ed. Note: As Leor Sapir says, “No more excuses.” Laurel Wamsley’s incompetent journalism is not only damaging NPR’s long-term credibility, but - and this is so much worse - the general public perception regarding the safety and appropriateness of the “gender-affirming” approach to treating children’s gender dysphoria. As Chloe Cole says in her tweet, “Blockers are a harmful gateway drug to becoming patient for life before experiencing adulthood.” It’s painfully obvious that the figure of 98% of adolescents continuing to use hormone treatments as adults, points to the conclusion that it’s a pathway to lifelong, habitual medication. That patient profile is chillingly similar to opiate addicts. This isn’t journalism. It’s advertising for Big Pharma’s latest cash cow.
Most teens who start puberty suppression continue gender-affirming care, study finds

A large majority of transgender adolescents who received puberty suppression treatment went on to continue gender-affirming treatment, a new study from the Netherlands has found.
The study, published in The Lancet, used data that included people who visited the gender identity clinic of Amsterdam UMC, a leading medical center in the Dutch capital, for gender dysphoria. (Gender dysphoria refers to psychological distress that results from an incongruence between one's sex assigned at birth and one's gender identity.)
Researchers found that a whopping 98% of people who had started gender-affirming medical treatment in adolescence continued to use gender-affirming hormones at follow-up. The finding is significant because of ongoing political debates over whether young people should receive gender-affirming treatment, with some opponents arguing that many transgender children and teens will realize later in life that they aren't really trans.
No apology needed. Old Yiddish saying. Your health comes first. You can always kill yourself later.
Love this compilation of some of the clearest thinkers calling out this BS NPR story--including your note, Lee. As you said to me, either the "journalist" is dishonest, or she is incompetent. Much more likely the former considering what it takes to get that particular job. It sickens and angers me that NPR is willing to spread this dangerous misinformation hurting so many children and their families.
