"The debate over how schools should accommodate students experiencing gender dysphoria has become so divisive in part because both sides speak different moral languages."
This day in Herstory: Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe, born June 14, 1811 (died July 1, 1896), was an American author and abolitionist. She came from the Beecher family, a religious family, and became best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), which depicts the harsh conditions experienced by enslaved African Americans. US - Republicans in Congress lay groundwork for anti-transgender push
From Reuters (USA)
By Moira Warburton and Rose Horowitch
July 14, 2022
WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) - U.S. Republicans in Congress are lining up behind legislation that critics say would roll back protections for transgender people, setting a playbook for action on a divisive social issue should they take control of Congress this fall.
The bills have no chance of becoming law this year, as Democrats narrowly control both chambers of Congress. But they are a sign that Republicans aim to elevate a battle over transgender rights that has so far largely played out at the state level.

US - On Rashida Tlaib and Chase Strangio’s Ridiculous, Bad-Faith Attack On The New York Times
“Bad people could use your words to do bad things” is, in most cases, a nonsensical argument
From Singal-Minded (USA)
By Jesse Singal
July 13, 2022
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan, just launched a broadside against The New York Times. …
It goes almost without saying that the Times has not published anything “debating whether trans people should even exist” — this seems to just be completely made-up, or relying on a very esoteric definition of “exist.” …
Anyway, the rumor about the Times’ supposed complicity in Texas’s policy was indeed sparked by Strangio, an ACLU lawyer who specializes in trans issues who is also one of its highest profile (and, full disclosure, combative and libel-ish) staffers, a little more than a week ago. … read full article

July 14, 2022
The debate over how schools should accommodate students experiencing gender dysphoria has become so divisive in part because both sides speak different moral languages.
Activists on the Left insist that "gender affirmation" is "lifesaving" care. When conservative state legislators in Florida proposed the Parental Rights in Education Act, it was quickly, and spuriously, labeled the "Don’t Say Gay" bill by critics. Conservative activists, in response, labeled it the "Anti-Groomer" bill. Things didn’t get less vitriolic from there. ... read full article

Internal emails from the Wyoming Department of Education show a discrepancy between Superintendent of Public Instruction Brian Schroeder’s scathing public messaging and more tempered behind-the-scenes guidance and discussion of a federal reinterpretation of anti-discrimination protections involving schools.
Schroeder has depicted the change in multiple statements as forcing schools to comply with a federal agenda of “social engineering” in order to continue receiving federal money that pays for school meals. He implied that the change would allow “boys in girls’ locker rooms” and was meant to pave the way for “boys in girls sports” and the “forced usage of pronouns.” ... read full article

One of Britain’s leading fertility experts has said that people cannot change their sex but can change gender by having what he described as “mutilating” operations.
Lord Winston of Hammersmith, a life peer, said that sex was “genetically determined” and questioned whether transgender people who identified as women should compete in the same sporting competitions as those born female.
Appearing on Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV, Winston said: “We can change our gender. We can do it by mutilating ourselves. We can remove bits of our body and change our shape and so on but you can’t change your sex because that is embedded in your genes in every cell of your body.” ... read full article
