This day in Herstory: The National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) was formed on May 15, 1869, to work for women's suffrage in the United States. Its main leaders were Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. It was created after the women's rights movement split over the proposed Fifteenth Amendment to the U. S. Constitution, which would in effect extend voting rights to black men. One wing of the movement supported the amendment while the other, the wing that formed the NWSA, opposed it, insisting that voting rights be extended to all women and all African Americans at the same time. As a consultation on the Scottish government’s contentious Gender Recognition Act (GRA) draws to a close, it has emerged that revisions to the bill would see rights given to people who believe that someone close to them should not be recognised as transgender. … read full article
SARAH VINE: Calvin Klein's surreal advert trivialises the trans debate
From The Daily Mail (UK)
By SARAH VINE
May 14, 2022
When it comes to the debate around trans issues, I have one simple rule. Go for it. If you were born male but want to live as a female, go for it. If you're a woman who wants to be a man, go for it. Just remember you are not the only one with rights and understand that for this to work we must all respect each other's opinions – even if they happen to differ.
At the end of the day this is not about gender, it's about humanity, and how we treat our fellow man, woman or, for that matter, anyone in-between.
That said, there is a small minority of the trans community whose motives and modus operandi I really can't fathom. … read full article

‘Inclusive’ terms reduce women to the sum of their parts, and some people seem to have internalized that messaging
From DeseretNews (USA)
By Bethany Mandel
May 14, 2022
Over the past two years or so, the term “birthing person” has taken hold on the left, taking the place of “mother” for those who want to be “inclusive” in their terminology.
“Mother,” they claim, is exclusionary of those who give birth but don’t identify as women. Therefore, we’re told our long-established terminology has to change to accommodate this new ideology. … read full article

Abbott issued the command seven days before the March 1 GOP primary election in which he was accused of not being conservative enough. While lower courts put the governor’s edict on hold, Paxton appealed. … read full article

Judicial Review of the NHS provision of treatment for transgender adults and children
What will this achieve if 'won' - and why are the Good Law Project prepared to assert as truth matters which are highly controversial and unsupported by evidence?
From Sarah’s Newsletter (UK)
By Sarah Phillimore
May 14, 2022
Too Long: Didn’t read
The Good Law Project and others argue that the NHS is acting unlawfully as it is not providing treatment quickly enough for transgender patients. The court gave permission for the judicial review to proceed on the basis that the grounds passed the ‘low threshold’ test of arguability. But the court also noted the futility of applying for a declaratory remedy i.e. the court agreeing that the NHS has broken the law, when the NHS is already doing all it could to deal with delays. However, the claimants argued that putting a ‘mark’ on the unlawful breaches would spur the NHS to take ‘proportionate’ steps to comply. … read full article

The Orwellian name of the Democrats’ new ‘Disinformation Board’ need not have instantly repelled people like me. People who are truly worried by the barrage of harmful rubbish people like my taxi driver in Devon last week have been drinking up thirstily from the internet’s many poisoned udders.
Said taxi driver was an intelligent mother of two, living in the middle of nowhere, and disinformation, fake news, and the conspiracy theories they stoke had got to her. She believed everything from the idea that wearing a mask is lethal for personal health, to that of the Ukraine war being cooked up by agents in a shadowy but pre-ordained new world order, to the hypothesis that Elon Musk wants to implant scorpion-shaped devices inside all our brains. … read full article

By all the usual auguries, Republicans are headed for sweeping gains in the midterm elections.
“It’s going to be a terrible cycle for Democrats,” Doug Sosnik, a former senior advisor to Bill Clinton, told The New York Times last month. Amy Walter, the editor of The Cook Political Report, says both parties are bracing for “a Red Tsunami.” According to CNN’s Chris Cillizza, “the signs are all there” for a GOP takeover of Capitol Hill: “President Joe Biden is unpopular, Republican base voters are more energized than Democratic ones, and House Democratic retirements are near historic highs.” … read full article
